Book Review: Dining at Walt Disney World, The Definitive Guide by Mary Morales

November 26, 2014 By Tony Caselnova

51j4HnodTOL._SY344_BO1,204,203,200_

I received a free copy of the 2015 Edition of Dining at Walt Disney World, The Definitive Guide by Rick Killingsworth and Paula Brown to review. As a Disney Foodie, I was thrilled to be able to check out this book and the day it arrived, I ripped open the package and began reading. I had high expectations, considering that I follow DisneyDining.com, Rick’s website, and love the information it provides.

I am going to start with this caveat. If you are looking for food and restaurant photos, menus, pricing or restaurant hours – you will NOT find them in this book. I was initially very disappointed with that. But then I took a step back and looked at this book for what it is – a comprehensive listing of restaurants, food courts and kiosks at Disney World, and with that being said, it does a good job. The descriptions are brief, providing few details, but do give a good overview of the food offerings at Disney World.

The book is broken down into sections of tips and general dining information, theme parks, water parks, downtown Disney and the resorts. I was also very happy to see that ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, Shades of Green, The Swan and The Dolphin were included in this guide. There is also a helpful chapter on tipping. I also enjoyed that they touched upon the food trucks area coming to Downtown Disney. They even wrote about my personal obsession, Disney cupcakes – which I truly believe should be their own food group!!!!

There is a brief section for those who have food allergies. It is not a complete or all-inclusive guide, but more of an overview. I realize that this is not their area of expertise, nor is that the focus of the book. It is more wishful thinking on my behalf that someone will come out with a really great guide for those with allergies and other specialized dining needs.

The book explains that its organization was broken down into full service and character dining, quick service, and snacks and beverages. However, the format in which it was presented, kept changing in each section and made it difficult to follow at times. Breaking down the parks’ information into a section for snacks and a section for beverages was a little redundant and could have been better presented as one section. There is a change of format when you get to the water parks section where the snacks and beverages are combined (which I prefer) and then another change of format at the resorts section, which was just a straight listing of all of the offerings.

While every restaurant, food court and kiosk is listed in this book, the descriptions are highly general. Often signature dishes and even the location of snacks and treats with cult like followings (i.e., the Skol Bread in Norway) are not listed. There was some information missing that I would have liked to see. Some examples: there was no mention that Tables in Wonderland card holders can get free valet parking when dining, provided that they show their receipt, and while they did cover that Be Our Guest is a quick service for lunch and a table service for dinner, in the Magic Kingdom dining section, there was no mention that the Beast is only at Be Our Guest during dinner. I will say that I was pleased that they mentioned information about the Landry’s Select Club – this tidbit of information is a well-kept secret and happy that they shared this money saving tip. Also included were the room service hours at the various resorts, a definite plus.

Something that really stuck out for me was that the book only talked about quick service dining being offered during Disney World’s famous free dining promotion. As a frequent Disney traveler, who LOVES free dining, I am well aware that the plus dining plan is also offered during free dining.

There was also some contradiction in the information provided, such as stating that alcohol is never included in the dining plan. Those who use the dining plan know that alcohol is included in shows such as the Luau, Hoop Dee Doo Review and Mickey’s Backyard BBQ. Later in the book, they do state that alcohol is included with the dinner shows.

Overall, this book provides brief descriptions of the food offerings throughout Disney World. It is a full listing of food locations, but does not provide much detail on the actual food. If you are an experienced Disney World traveler or food lover, this book will not provide you with much new or helpful information. If you are a first time traveler to Disney World or someone not familiar with the various food offerings, this book will be helpful in getting you organized to make your Advanced Dining Reservations and provide some basic dining tips.

Walt Disney World for Those That Don’t Like Theme Parks by Joshua Snyder

November 20, 2014 By Tony Caselnova

There are people that simply do not like theme parks. *GASP* I know it’s hard to believe, but it’s true. My father, for example, does not like crowds and only does Disney because my other family members like it so much. This article is dedicated to people just like him. There really are so many different things you can do at Walt Disney World that don’t even involve the parks. Let’s take a closer look at some of those things. Maybe I can even convince you to take some time away from your vacation and enjoy something you never knew you could find in the “Vacation Kingdom”.

Sports: Did you know that there are dozens of different sports offerings at Walt Disney World? For instance, Walt Disney World hosts 2 beautifully designed 18 hole championship golf courses, used every year for the PGA tour. Both of these courses are literally just minutes from the Magic Kingdom. There’s also ESPN Wide World Of Sports, which hosts the Atlanta Braves spring training every year. For the die-hard fishing fan, there’s fishing galore all over Walt Disney World property. You can even take guided fishing tours at many of the resort hotels. And don’t forget the water sports. There’s parasailing, canoe rides, paddle boats, surfing (Typhoon Lagoon water park), water skiing, and more. And for the equestrian types, there’s horseback riding at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground.

Shopping: The Downtown Disney District, soon to be rechristened Disney Springs, is a shopper’s paradise. You can find everything from park souvenirs to specially blended bath products within the shopping center. Over 50 stores give you a chance to find something for everyone without needing to go from mall to mall to find everything. And if you’re shopping in the parks, you have the option of not carrying your bags with you while you shop. You can have your bags sent to the front of the park to be picked up when you leave, or you can have them shipped back to your resort hotel room complimentary if you’re staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel.

Dining: This is where Walt Disney World really shines outside of the parks. Throughout the property there are over 150 different dining options to chose from, ranging from a quick hot dog to an award winning 10 course feast. All over property you can find great quick service options serving anything from traditional burgers and fries to specialty items like boeuf bourguignon. And if you’re looking for something a little more filling, there are lots of table service options to chose from, like Fulton’s Crab House, Wolfgang Puck, Le Cellier, and Liberty Tree Tavern (the only place on Walt Disney World property that you can get a traditional thanksgiving dinner every single day of the year). There is something for every single palate, even the pickiest of little eaters.

Relaxation: There are so many options to chose from if you simply just want to relax and leave your cares behind that I simply cannot mention them all. Most of the resort hotels that have lakes on property have wonderful beaches where you can pull up a reclining deck chair or a hammock and sleep the day away. Every single resort hotel has an amazing pool (most of them have more than one to enjoy) where you can swim your cares away. Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa and Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa both have the amazing Senses Spa, and the Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel houses the Mandara Spa.

You can also opt for a quiet private fireworks cruise in front of Magic Kingdom, away from the hustle & bustle of the park. Some of the resorts and the water parks also offer private cabanas where you can enjoy a leisurely day to yourself. Some of the resorts also offer bicycle and surrey bike rentals so you can enjoy the resort from a different angle. Most of the resorts also offer running and hiking trails for a nice quiet walk through experience. Also for those with a more romantic side, there are carriage rides available at Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground and Disney’s Port Orleans Resorts.

Most people come to the Walt Disney World Resort with a focus on doing the parks, but if you have any free time or are just not a park person, don’t think for a minute that there’s nothing to do. Walt Disney World was truly created as a “Vacation Kingdom” with something for everyone to do, both inside and outside its award winning parks. Have you tried some of the things listed here? I’d love to hear what your favorites are. If I’ve not listed them, I’d love to hear about them too!
