MAGIC IN THE DETAILS: THE SECRET CITIZENS OF DISNEY’S HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS by Guest Author Adam M. Berger

December 14, 2014 By Tony Caselnova

Over the years, I’ve found that a whole new level of enjoyment opens up when you take the time to notice the countless details that combine to create the immersive environments of the Disney theme parks. Even if you’re not consciously aware of them, those details still register in the corners of your mind, helping to “sell” the story that the Disney Imagineers are trying to communicate. There are some especially brilliant examples of these details at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. So please join me on a quick tour of the park as we discover together how these details tell the story of a living, breathing show biz community.

The term “community,” of course, conveys that this is a place where people not only work, but actually reside. And, if you know where to look, you’ll find plenty of clues (within the context of the park’s overarching storyline) that this is exactly what’s going on at DHS. And you don’t have to look very far to find the first of those clues. As soon as you enter the park, just glance over toward the restrooms across from Oscar’s Super Service and let your eyes follow the staircase up to the second floor. Yes indeed—that’s an apartment you see up there!

1

On the opposite side of Hollywood Boulevard, you’ll spot another upstairs apartment.

2

And who lives in those apartments? Your guess is as good as mine. Perhaps they are inhabited by the shopkeepers and restaurant workers and theater ushers who staff the ground level businesses. Or maybe they are rented by the actors or movie technicians or animators who work in the Hollywood film industry. Or maybe some of those units belong to these two characters:

3

At least you don’t have to wonder who lives upstairs in the “Echo Lake Apartments,” wedged between the Hollywood & Vine restaurant and 50’s Prime Time Café.

 4

Just ease in close to the gate at the bottom of the stairway and take a close look at the names on the ten apartment mailboxes.

 5

Sometimes the units above the ground level businesses are also businesses. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out who works in this upstairs office, above the Hollywood & Vine restaurant—especially if you’re a fan of Disney’s Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

 6

Are you beginning to appreciate what the Imagineers have done here? Not only have they created a highly detailed themescape for you to enjoy; they’ve also sprinkled it with numerous little clues your brain quietly processes to signal to your subconscious that this artificial place may actually be a real, living community. That illusion, in turn, puts you in a sort of psychological comfort zone that allows you to enjoy your time in the park on a deeper, more meaningful level.

So have you ever noticed the upstairs residences or businesses at DHS? Do you have any favorites? Feel free to chime in using the “Leave a Comment” link, below.

Disneyland News for December 14, 2014 ~By Randy Crane

December 14, 2014 By Tony Caselnova

Just one bit of Disneyland news, but it’s a pretty big one—to one person anyway. Back in July I reported on the contest Disney was running as part of the preparation (or pre-celebration) for the Disneyland Resort’s 60th Anniversary next year. Guests could submit photos via Instagram and Twitter, and the top entries were posted on the Disney Parks Blog for fans to vote on. The winner would get a trip to the start of the Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration in spring 2015. Well, that winner has now been announced and posted on the Disney Parks Blog.  The video highlighting the finalists from each decade and announcing the winner is all music and pictures so it doesn’t work great on an audio podcast, but the link to the post is  HERE    and the winner is @kerinimb! It’s truly worth checking out the video and spending 2 and a half minutes enjoying some great memories of Disneyland past and present!

New Disneyland High-End Restaurant Serving Alcohol Inside the Park!

December 11, 2014 By Tony Caselnova

There’s a new dining room above New Orleans Square adjacent to the private membership Club 33 in Disneyland. But, unlike Club 33, this new restaurant will be open to the general public. This new restaurant, which hasn’t been named yet, will rival Napa Rose in the Grand Californian and Victoria and Albert Restaurant at Walt Disney World. This is the first time that alcohol has been served outside of Club 33 in Disneyland during regular operating hours. Thanks to our friend Gavin over at Disney Dose for this hot off the presses news!!

Book Review: Dining at Walt Disney World, The Definitive Guide by Mary Morales

November 26, 2014 By Tony Caselnova

51j4HnodTOL._SY344_BO1,204,203,200_

I received a free copy of the 2015 Edition of Dining at Walt Disney World, The Definitive Guide by Rick Killingsworth and Paula Brown to review. As a Disney Foodie, I was thrilled to be able to check out this book and the day it arrived, I ripped open the package and began reading. I had high expectations, considering that I follow DisneyDining.com, Rick’s website, and love the information it provides.

I am going to start with this caveat. If you are looking for food and restaurant photos, menus, pricing or restaurant hours – you will NOT find them in this book. I was initially very disappointed with that. But then I took a step back and looked at this book for what it is – a comprehensive listing of restaurants, food courts and kiosks at Disney World, and with that being said, it does a good job. The descriptions are brief, providing few details, but do give a good overview of the food offerings at Disney World.

The book is broken down into sections of tips and general dining information, theme parks, water parks, downtown Disney and the resorts. I was also very happy to see that ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, Shades of Green, The Swan and The Dolphin were included in this guide. There is also a helpful chapter on tipping. I also enjoyed that they touched upon the food trucks area coming to Downtown Disney. They even wrote about my personal obsession, Disney cupcakes – which I truly believe should be their own food group!!!!

There is a brief section for those who have food allergies. It is not a complete or all-inclusive guide, but more of an overview. I realize that this is not their area of expertise, nor is that the focus of the book. It is more wishful thinking on my behalf that someone will come out with a really great guide for those with allergies and other specialized dining needs.

The book explains that its organization was broken down into full service and character dining, quick service, and snacks and beverages. However, the format in which it was presented, kept changing in each section and made it difficult to follow at times. Breaking down the parks’ information into a section for snacks and a section for beverages was a little redundant and could have been better presented as one section. There is a change of format when you get to the water parks section where the snacks and beverages are combined (which I prefer) and then another change of format at the resorts section, which was just a straight listing of all of the offerings.

While every restaurant, food court and kiosk is listed in this book, the descriptions are highly general. Often signature dishes and even the location of snacks and treats with cult like followings (i.e., the Skol Bread in Norway) are not listed. There was some information missing that I would have liked to see. Some examples: there was no mention that Tables in Wonderland card holders can get free valet parking when dining, provided that they show their receipt, and while they did cover that Be Our Guest is a quick service for lunch and a table service for dinner, in the Magic Kingdom dining section, there was no mention that the Beast is only at Be Our Guest during dinner. I will say that I was pleased that they mentioned information about the Landry’s Select Club – this tidbit of information is a well-kept secret and happy that they shared this money saving tip. Also included were the room service hours at the various resorts, a definite plus.

Something that really stuck out for me was that the book only talked about quick service dining being offered during Disney World’s famous free dining promotion. As a frequent Disney traveler, who LOVES free dining, I am well aware that the plus dining plan is also offered during free dining.

There was also some contradiction in the information provided, such as stating that alcohol is never included in the dining plan. Those who use the dining plan know that alcohol is included in shows such as the Luau, Hoop Dee Doo Review and Mickey’s Backyard BBQ. Later in the book, they do state that alcohol is included with the dinner shows.

Overall, this book provides brief descriptions of the food offerings throughout Disney World. It is a full listing of food locations, but does not provide much detail on the actual food. If you are an experienced Disney World traveler or food lover, this book will not provide you with much new or helpful information. If you are a first time traveler to Disney World or someone not familiar with the various food offerings, this book will be helpful in getting you organized to make your Advanced Dining Reservations and provide some basic dining tips.
