Walt Disney World for Those That Don’t Like Theme Parks by Joshua Snyder

November 20, 2014 By Tony Caselnova

There are people that simply do not like theme parks. *GASP* I know it’s hard to believe, but it’s true. My father, for example, does not like crowds and only does Disney because my other family members like it so much. This article is dedicated to people just like him. There really are so many different things you can do at Walt Disney World that don’t even involve the parks. Let’s take a closer look at some of those things. Maybe I can even convince you to take some time away from your vacation and enjoy something you never knew you could find in the “Vacation Kingdom”.

Sports: Did you know that there are dozens of different sports offerings at Walt Disney World? For instance, Walt Disney World hosts 2 beautifully designed 18 hole championship golf courses, used every year for the PGA tour. Both of these courses are literally just minutes from the Magic Kingdom. There’s also ESPN Wide World Of Sports, which hosts the Atlanta Braves spring training every year. For the die-hard fishing fan, there’s fishing galore all over Walt Disney World property. You can even take guided fishing tours at many of the resort hotels. And don’t forget the water sports. There’s parasailing, canoe rides, paddle boats, surfing (Typhoon Lagoon water park), water skiing, and more. And for the equestrian types, there’s horseback riding at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground.

Shopping: The Downtown Disney District, soon to be rechristened Disney Springs, is a shopper’s paradise. You can find everything from park souvenirs to specially blended bath products within the shopping center. Over 50 stores give you a chance to find something for everyone without needing to go from mall to mall to find everything. And if you’re shopping in the parks, you have the option of not carrying your bags with you while you shop. You can have your bags sent to the front of the park to be picked up when you leave, or you can have them shipped back to your resort hotel room complimentary if you’re staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel.

Dining: This is where Walt Disney World really shines outside of the parks. Throughout the property there are over 150 different dining options to chose from, ranging from a quick hot dog to an award winning 10 course feast. All over property you can find great quick service options serving anything from traditional burgers and fries to specialty items like boeuf bourguignon. And if you’re looking for something a little more filling, there are lots of table service options to chose from, like Fulton’s Crab House, Wolfgang Puck, Le Cellier, and Liberty Tree Tavern (the only place on Walt Disney World property that you can get a traditional thanksgiving dinner every single day of the year). There is something for every single palate, even the pickiest of little eaters.

Relaxation: There are so many options to chose from if you simply just want to relax and leave your cares behind that I simply cannot mention them all. Most of the resort hotels that have lakes on property have wonderful beaches where you can pull up a reclining deck chair or a hammock and sleep the day away. Every single resort hotel has an amazing pool (most of them have more than one to enjoy) where you can swim your cares away. Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa and Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa both have the amazing Senses Spa, and the Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel houses the Mandara Spa.

You can also opt for a quiet private fireworks cruise in front of Magic Kingdom, away from the hustle & bustle of the park. Some of the resorts and the water parks also offer private cabanas where you can enjoy a leisurely day to yourself. Some of the resorts also offer bicycle and surrey bike rentals so you can enjoy the resort from a different angle. Most of the resorts also offer running and hiking trails for a nice quiet walk through experience. Also for those with a more romantic side, there are carriage rides available at Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground and Disney’s Port Orleans Resorts.

Most people come to the Walt Disney World Resort with a focus on doing the parks, but if you have any free time or are just not a park person, don’t think for a minute that there’s nothing to do. Walt Disney World was truly created as a “Vacation Kingdom” with something for everyone to do, both inside and outside its award winning parks. Have you tried some of the things listed here? I’d love to hear what your favorites are. If I’ve not listed them, I’d love to hear about them too!

A Tale of Christmas

November 4, 2014 By Tony Caselnova

Every year, from the end of November till the end of December,Epcot plays host to Epcot’s Candlelight Processional. Held in the America Garden Theater located in between the Japan and Italy pavilions, this is a wonderful retelling of the biblical tale of Christ’s birth.

IMG_0122.JPG
This event features a full orchestra and choir as well as a celebrity narrator. This is one of the most popular events during the holiday season. The event is included with price of admission into Epcot but seats for the 3 shows per day fill up quickly with people waiting in the standby line for hours to secure their seat. The other very popular option is to purchase a Candlelight Processional Dining Package. This includes either lunch or dinner in some of Epcot’s most popular restaurants as well as a guaranteed seat in the theatre for the show. To me this is the best option. You are probably eating at the park anyway AND you don’t have to waste time waiting in line.

The list of Celebrity Narrators is fantastic!

Jodi Benson November 28 and 29, 2014
Neil Patrick Harris November 30 to December 2, 2014
Jonathan Groff (NEW!) December 3 and 4, 2014
Whoopi Goldberg December 5 and 6, 2014
LeVar Burton December 7 to December 9, 2014
Edward James Olmos December 10 to December 11, 2014
Joe Morton December 12 to December 14, 2014
Chita Rivera December 15 to December 17, 2014
Ana Gasteyer (NEW!) December 18 to December 20, 2014
Marlee Matlin December 21 to December 23, 2014
Isabella Rossellini December 24 and 25, 2014
Blair Underwood December 26 and 27, 2014
Steven Curtis Chapman December 28 to December 30, 2014

Performances are every night from November 28th – December 30,2014.
There are 3 performances a night at 5 PM, [6:45] PM, and [8:15] PM
EXCEPT ON
December 7th with performances being at [6:45] PM and [8:15] PM

As always, celebrity narrators and dates are subject to change without notice. They are always fantastic though.

Participating dining locations include:

*Biergarten
*Chef de France
*Coral Reef
*The Garden Grill
*La Hacienda de San Angel
*Nine Dragons
*Restaurant Marrakesh
*Rose & Crown
*San Angel Inn
*Teppan Edo
*Tokyo Dining
*Tutto Italia
*Via Napoli

This is a wonderful show not to be missed! This, in conjunction with Holidays Around the World also going on at Epcot during the holiday season make for a fantastic time!

Disney Park Podcast Meetup – Newbie Style!

November 1, 2014 By Tony Caselnova

DDP Meetup.jpg

On October 19th, I threw myself into the happy world of a Disney Parks Podcast meetup. Having received an invitation to attend the week before, I couldn’t wait to meet these amazing  Disney fans. I had seen their photos on Facebook and on the podcast site, listened to the podcasts, and even wondered what they were like in person. My family and I took the monorail to Polynesian Resort and headed for the Pineapple Lanai (Hello? Dole Whip!). It was there I met over a dozen of the fine folks that either host the podcast or are fans and friends of the hosts and podcast itself..

I was happily surprised. The fine folks from DPP are incredibly down to earth and all share a common bond- the love of a mouse named Mickey. We chatted about the latest park news, talked about the previous visits, and a few of us even swapped Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom cards! My daughter’s new Magic Kingdom obsession allowed her to make friends with some of the finest Disney folks I’ve ever met.

Krista Joy treated us to goodie bags filled with Disney merchandise and souvenirs, sponsored by Homes4uu.com. Although she didn’t need to win us over with ‘em, her thoughtfulness was impressive.

DDP meetup Krista photo.jpg

After about an hour, my newly found Disney friends took a few photos (the one above is Krista’s), said our goodbyes, and went on our merry ways. My DDP meetup was a definite highlight of our trip to Disney and I look forward to my next one. Fingers crossed it will involve Dole Whip!
